Types of Depression

There are several types of depression, some of which are listed below.

Mild Depression

Mild depression has a limited negative effect on one’s daily life. For instance, there might be difficulty concentrating in the workplace.

Major Depression

Has a significant impact on the persons day-to-day activities such as eating, sleeping or hygiene.

Bi-polar I Disorder

This is characterised by mood swings from extreme – from highs in a manic episode, where the person has inflated self-esteem, little need for sleep, is talkative, distractible, may engage in activities that are harmful such as shopping sprees, unsafe sex or poor business decisions. This is often followed by feelings of intense sadness, weight loss, inability to think, feelings of worthlessness, and thoughts of death. There may be psychotic features present.

Post-natal Depression

Post-natal depression lasts longer than baby blues and is more severe. Some mothers feel totally unable to cope and inadequate. Some mothers may find it difficult to bond with their child and may feel negatively about it. They can have difficulty sleeping, experience panic attacks and fear death. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

People that are affected with SAD are typically significantly more depressed between winter and spring. SAD can impact on sleeping and eating patterns.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

This is characterised by depression that lasts for at least two years. Any break is for less than two months. There has never been a manic or hypomanic episode.

Substance/Medication Induced Depressive Disorder

This is defined as a persistent disturbance in mood that has developed soon after taking or withdrawing from drugs or medication which cannot be explained by a naturally occurring depressive disorder.

Disruptive Mood Disregulation Disorder

This is characterised by severe temper outbursts that are out of keeping with the situation or provocation, and inconsistent with age. These outbursts might occur at least three or more times per week for at least 12 months.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). When the symptoms of PMS are very severe a diagnosis of PMDD might be made. Although PMDD is technically not a form of depression, depression is a key symptom of PMDD.
